gotmilkYesterday, I talked to my pediatrician about weaning and I asked her about cows milk. She agrees that cows milk is NOT the best option. Kids need three things: Calcium, Fat and Vitamin D. You can get these from a variety of different foods other than cows milk.

#1. Calcium
Calcium-Rich Foods: Sunflower Seeds, Tofu, Broccoli, Arugula, Turnip Greens, Dried Figs, Yogurt, White Beans, Salmon, Almonds, Soybeans, Sesame Seeds, Oatmeal, Calcium Fortified Soy Milk, Oranges, Kale, Papaya, Spinach, Calcium Fortified Almond Milk, Calcium Fortified Orange Juice, Calcium Fortified Cereals.

#2. Fat
Good Fat: Peanut Butter, Avocados, Olive Oil, Canola Oil, Olives, Ground Flaxseeds.

#3. Vitamin D
Good Sources of Vitamin D: Salmon, Tuna, Cod, Mackerel, Catfish and other fatty Fish, Shrimp, Eggs,  Soy Milk with Vitamin D, Almond Milk with Vitamin D, Cereals that are fortified with Vitamin D, Vitamin D Drops, Five to Thirty Minutes of Sun Exposure a week.
